Exceptional Sporting Opportunities
Sport plays a central role at Berkhampstead, supporting our commitment to developing confident, resilient and well-rounded pupils. Through a broad and engaging programme, children are encouraged to enjoy being active, challenge themselves, and develop a lifelong love of sport.
From the earliest years, pupils benefit from high-quality teaching. Physical Education is taught by a specialist PE teacher from Kindergarten through to Year 2, ensuring that children build strong fundamental skills, coordination and confidence from the very start of their school journey. Swimming is also an important part of our provision, with pupils in Years 2 and 3 attending lessons at Cheltenham Ladies’ College.
As pupils progress into Years 3 to 6, they experience a more structured programme of team sports. Our main sports are hockey, netball and cricket for girls, and rugby, football and cricket for boys. These sessions focus not only on developing technical ability, but also teamwork, sportsmanship and resilience.
From Year 3 onwards, pupils take part in a busy and exciting calendar of inter-school fixtures. These opportunities allow children to represent the school, experience healthy competition and take pride in their achievements as part of a team. We believe that participation is key and provide opportunities for all pupils to be involved.
Our facilities support a wide range of sporting opportunities. On site, we have our own multi-use games area and netball courts. We also make excellent use of local facilities including the Victoria Ground (home to Cheltenham Cricket Club) and Newlands Park rugby ground, enabling pupils to experience sport in a variety of high-quality environments.
Beyond the curriculum, extracurricular sports clubs further enrich our offering, and include boys’ hockey, girls’ football, running and fencing.
Our strong sporting culture, combined with expert coaching and a supportive environment, ensures that pupils are well prepared for the next stage of their education. Many of our pupils go on to achieve sports scholarships to leading senior schools.
