Welcome from the Head of School

At Berkhampstead, we see every child as an individual, each with their own unique spark, interests and potential. Our job - and our joy - is to recognise and nurture this individuality, offering a tailored education within a warm, inclusive and caring environment.
We are a non-selective independent day school, but that doesn’t mean we compromise on ambition. High standards and a love of learning run through everything we do. With small class sizes and an exceptional teaching team, every child is known, supported and stretched – and this personalised approach leads to excellent 11+ and scholarship outcomes.

From their very first days in Kindergarten, our pupils are taught by subject specialists who bring real depth, rigour and passion to their teaching. This expert input allows children to thrive in a stimulating environment that stretches their thinking and builds lasting confidence.

But a Berkhampstead education is about so much more than just academic results. We offer a rich and rounded experience – one where music, sport, drama and outdoor learning play a central role. Our pupils are curious, enthusiastic and full of life. They leave us not just well-prepared for senior school, but as resilient, confident and kind young people, ready to embrace the world.

We were proud that our outstanding pastoral care and ambitious curriculum were recognised in our most recent ISI inspection, with inspectors praising our pupils’ independence, positive attitudes and enthusiasm for learning.
Set in the beautiful, leafy surroundings of Pittville Circus in Cheltenham, Berkhampstead is a joyful, vibrant school – a place where childhood is celebrated and curiosity is encouraged every step of the way.

Head of School

“My own family is very important to me, and I see the Berkhampstead community as an extension of this. This is a very special place, and I am proud to be its Head of School.” Mrs Michelle Bareham

OUR AIMS

To provide a happy, caring and fun environment which encourages effort and achievement.

To foster a genuine feeling of community based on strong family values.

To provide a learning environment that is stimulating, exciting and varied – where all pupils and staff feel respected, valued and inspired to strive for excellence.

To focus on each pupil’s individual strengths, support their challenges, celebrate their achievements and develop their confidence and social skills.

To foster a ‘can-do’ attitude and encourage participation and enjoyment in music, art, drama and competitive sport.

To prepare pupils to move on with confidence to the next stage of their education and ultimately to the senior school of their choice.

“The happy, caring and fun environment is met through robust pastoral systems and a clear culture of care, which promotes pupils’ self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence.” ISI Report, November 2023
