At Berkhampstead School, we believe these early years are precious. They lay the foundations not only for academic success, but for gently fostering confidence and character. In our Kindergarten and Reception classes, children are nurtured and inspired from the beginning of their educational journey.

Our children benefit from specialist teaching in French, Music and PE. These passionate subject experts bring depth of knowledge and enthusiasm to every lesson, igniting curiosity and helping children to begin building firm foundations in their learning. The children learn in bright, modern classrooms and enjoy access to an all-weather games area, a newly constructed playground, a dedicated Early Years gym, a Forest School area and a wealth of high-quality resources.
With a maximum of 18 pupils in each of our two Reception classes, and an average staff-to-child ratio of 1:8, every child is known very well. Our teachers and teaching assistants provide carefully tailored support and challenge when necessary. A strong academic foundation begins early; from Kindergarten we use the Essential Letters and Sounds phonics programme to gently begin the process of developing fluent, confident readers and writers, alongside White Rose Maths to support a carefully structured and engaging approach to mathematics.
Each day, our children enjoy delicious, home cooked lunches served in a family-style setting, with a member of staff leading each table to encourage healthy eating habits and good table manners. Our smart school uniform fosters a strong sense of belonging, while thoughtful, considerate behaviour is woven into everyday life.
From their very first days at Berkhampstead, our Early Years children are encouraged to explore, question and discover - building a firm educational foundation, rooted in confidence and a genuine love of learning.
